Hanover 141 Environmental Design 2, 2023, BAS

A five-storey public library designed for Dunedin's Climate Zone 5, with sustainability embedded in the structural and envelope strategy rather than applied as a layer.

Thermal comfort is managed through a shaft double-skin facade, triple glazing, underfloor heating, and careful surface-to-volume ratio optimisation. High ceilings, a central atrium, and a glazed roof maximise daylight penetration, while louvres and a terracotta facade handle solar shading. The building collects and reuses water, and is naturally ventilated where the climate allows.

The structure is concrete, chosen for longevity and adaptability. The design anticipates future retrofitting rather than replacement, minimising lifecycle carbon by extending the building's useful life. A legally binding agreement is proposed to prevent demolition, committing the building to adaptive reuse across generations.
